Creation

Vedanta philosophy offers a profound perspective on the concept of creation. According to Vedanta, the Nirguna and Nirakar Brahman, which represents pure consciousness without qualities or form, manifests as the universe we perceive.

Pure consciousness, when influenced by Maya (the cosmic illusion or creative power), takes the form of Ishwara, the personal God. Ishwara is the first manifestation of Brahman under the influence of Maya and serves as the creator. From Ishwara arises the “Cosmic Mind”, also referred to as Hiranyagarbha, which represents the subtle, unmanifested aspect of the universe. Subsequently, from Hiranyagarbha emerges the Gross world, known as “Viraat”, which is the tangible, physical manifestation of existence.

A key question arises: Why does pure consciousness create the world, and what is the purpose behind this act of creation? One beautiful explanation is based on the principle that whatever possesses potential naturally seeks to express it. For instance, during deep sleep, there is neither perception of the mind nor the body, yet existence remains in a state of pure potential. This latent potential expresses itself as mind during dreams, where the dream, the dream world, and the dreamer are all manifestations of the mind itself.

In the waking state, the same consciousness functions through the mind and body, taking on various roles such as man, woman, father, mother, husband, and wife—roles that do not exist in the state of deep sleep. Thus, every individual returns to their natural state during deep sleep each day. Upon waking up, the individual assumes different identities, moving from a state of pure being to various forms of becoming. It is this transition from being to becoming that leads to the experience of suffering.

The entire purpose of Sadhana, or spiritual practice, is to return from the state of becoming to the original state of being. By shedding the layers of assumed identities and roles, one seeks to rediscover their true nature.

Vedanta’s explanation of creation highlights the journey from pure potential to manifest existence, both at the cosmic and individual levels. The ultimate goal is to recognise this process and use spiritual practice to return to one’s natural state of being.
